Globalization of Bollywood song and dance!

Not many years ago Bollywood movies with their song and dance routines were mocked by audiences outside India. Now Bollywood music and Bollywood dancing are trendy and chic. It’s an inspiration, a novelty, a creative exuberance and gaining great fans across the globe.

In the 1970 and 80’s the Bollywood music got popular abroad with Bollywood star shows in countries like Soviet Union, Middle East, Africa, and other South Asian countries. The Indian diasporas in other countries were the main audience for the Bollywood music which spread to having a fan following from the locals in these countries.

Now Bollywood music and dance with its richness and flair have become popular in the mainstream in the west and other countries across the globe. Bollywood is doing a cultural invasion across the world. Bollywood music and songs are becoming great inspirations of creativity in art forms, the Bollywood music is considered exhilarating, the rhythms are pulsating and energetic while Bollywood dance classes are now a new fad. The new Bollywood trend and influence is indeed defining globalization.

Review: Birjis Adeni Rashed

Sid: A childish, carefree, college kid
Dress: Wears cartoon comics socks, cartoon graphic t-shirts and sleeps in spongebob bedding
Fetish: For cars, photographing feet and monsoon rains in Mumbai!
Personality trait: Lives in the present and sees no tomorrow.

Aisha: Mature, independent, level- headed, focused & motivated.
Dress: Jeans and Kurtis
Passion: To do something in life! “Adventure not like a vacation, like life”
Personality trait: Creative, organized, meticulous, writer, enjoys freedom.
Her idea of perfect man: mature, independent, goal oriented, rational, and balanced person, ‘a man not a boy’.

Situation: Reality check, Privileges snatched, up close understanding of life.
One line description: Education of life!

When a rich, lazy and happy-go-lucky Sid is pushed to stand on his feet, he is bewildered and confused. He counts on his mature friend Aisha to be his coach, guide, friend and role model. In this education of life, the divergent personalities who seek different things in life, and don’t want to have more than a platonic relationship or more than being friends; develop a special bonding, caring tenderness, affection and love.

The romance is not mushy, but very slice of life; the pair is not conventional but has good chemistry. The story is very simple and nothing new but handled with finesse, realism and depth in characterization. The direction is excellent and simply precise. The director Ayan mukerjee, like Farhan Akhtar’s “Dil Chahta Hai” recreates a movie of relationships, friends, depth in characters, tender spontaneous moments, simple situations with changing dynamics of life. The realistic perspectives with low melodrama make the audience relate to the movie.

The negative point could only be that the story makes life look easy for the protagonists with not much hassles and hurdles to succeed in the metropolitan city of Mumbai! Well, one can disregard some details; after all it’s a movie!

Ranbir kapoor and Konkana Sen Sharma give admirable performances. Ranbir personifying the character of Sid to the ‘T’ was perfect for the role. Konkona is a natural actor and did a good job as usual. The performances of new faces like Shikha Talsania and Namit Das was again outstanding. Seasoned actors like Supriya pathak and Anupam kher had good performances. The music is pleasant and lyrics well written. The songs are montaged on scenes instead of the typical bollywood song dance, again giving it more lifelike feel. An excellent Karan Johar production.

Review: Birjis Adeni Rashed

"Yeh to Bardasht ke bahar hai" - this is beyond tolerance... is a statement we voiced every few minutes in the movie, sitting as the minuscule audience in the empty theatre. Not being the type who walk out of movies, we tolerated this boring, cheesy, predictable, clichéd, stereotype, formula for 2.5 hrs.

If Yash Raj Films, India’s top production company starts making movies like this, it’s a signal that creativity and intelligence is dying in bollywood! The poor screenplay and flimsy story is about a girl who acts like a guy to achieve her dream of playing cricket. To support this underdeveloped story, are mish-mashed and clichéd formulations, inferior quality dialogs, awful songs with worse lyrics and horrible direction.

The Yashraj films, either have stopped caring about overkill of locations and settings and clichés or don’t want to venture into newer pastures of creative imagination. The setting in DBH are the same old mustard and green fields of Punjab, used in umpteen Yashraj movies; has the same lorry’s and same roads and same lorry rides…; has run of the mill patriotic and nationalistic dialogs about India and Pakistan, peace , aman, etc ….; has a ton of hackneyed and clichéd Punjabi dialogs; has many rehashed scenes, references, dialogs and music from other successful movies like - Dilwale Dulhani Ley Jayenge, Veer-Zaara, Hum Apke Hai Kaun…..; has main protagonist coming from London, England like so many other Yashraj films; …. And the clichés go on.

To list the sorry factors in the movie-
If DBH is to be considered a sports movie, it lacks any thrills and excitement. Unlike Chak de India or Lagan, it has shoddy direction and lack of focus of subject . The Indian village cricket team is shown pathetic, before and after the supposed coaching for 6 months by England county cricket player, the story doesn’t take cues from previous links. Bad Captaincy is displayed, where a captain de-motivates players due to his romantic mistrusts. The game is not separated from the love-angle;

Dil bole..Hadippa can’t be called a love story either, since the screenplay doesn’t build up the love angle, hence reflecting lack of chemistry between Shahid and Rani.
As a comedy, it’s tragically stale. The Director Anurag Singh seems lost, with no understanding and focus on any one thing; All the characters seem undeveloped and weak. Screenplay and dialog writers need to know cutting and pasting dialogs from other movies is not writing. Hinglish trend which started from ‘Jab we Met’ is poorly imitated here with bad English and Hindi mix. The lyricist seems to have weird taste of words in the songs like beer, bater, pressure cooker, motor pump etc…; the presence of irrelevant characters like Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn chopra is ridiculous and makes it a very cheesy movie. The psychedelic colorful costumes and backgrounds in the movie have nothing eye catching, seemed inspiration from the bright Bunty Babli costumes of Rani….. It seems like the list here can be endless too.

The story’s only positive if any is, Rani Mukerjee, looks slim and sexy, and Shahid Kapoor shows off his well built muscles. Acting wise they didn’t do very well. A good actress like Rani does borderline overacting, may be the role/character required it! While Shahid does shades of good and bad acting. Anupam Kher too acted as if he was sorry to have acted in this movie. There are not many actors or characters in the movie, hence more of a low budget category.

The people who tragically suffer are the audience, who spent time and money on this movie. This movie is not for intelligent audiences or any audience.

Bollywood Influence on Fashion

Bollywood and Fashion have been related since time in memorial. Any fashion introduced in bollywood movies catches on without even a ‘trickledown effect’ into mainstream population. Any outfit worn by a bollywood actor or actress in a successful movie is instantly referred as example for the tailors around India to reproduce. The Readymade industry too immediately reproduces this outfits in bulk in variations of color and designs with the movie or character name; anarkali, jodha akbar, masakali are the latest few.

Well the fashion industry and designers of clothes and jewelry being aware of this phenomenon launch many of their fashions in movies. And many an actor and actress is a brand ambassador, advertising for many of the popular products of the fashion industry.

Now designers have moved on from the success of bollywood to independently designing products with bollywood and pop culture influence in their designs to western brand names and products.

Check out the bollywood influence on Swatch watches in the Manish Arora collections. Manish Arora known for wild palette of colors, strong contrasts, psychedelic art and kitsch motifs, has now created new line of bling-bling swatch watches!

Bollywood not stealing, now buying creativity!

How many Hindi movies, have you rented on DVD or even watched in theatre, where 10 minutes in the story, you realize you have seen this movie before? How many times have you thought, oh this scene is from _____ Hollywood movie , or this Desi movie is a collage of couple of Hollywood movies! Yes , the story is still obvious, in spite of it being ‘Indianized’, the dialogues are sometimes same, just translated in Hindi, of course there is added melodrama , song and dance and desi masala.... Well, that was the time when creativity could be borrowed at no price.

Now when Hollywood and bollywood productions are getting together in a few projects and the Bollywood movies are getting worldwide viewership… It’s now time for our film industry to stop plagiarizing, and give credit to the original, besides pay to copy!

Yes, Bollywood producers are now ready to recognize good work, borrow it and give its worth and credit. It’s not that Bollywood lacks creativity, it has abundance of it, with unique and classic blockbusters. But the Indian film industry churns out 100’s to 1000 movies a year, Bollywood alone releasing twice the number than Hollywood, hence some of these movies turn out from borrowed ideas;) But now by giving credit to the original, and even paying for it, they can consider themselves as spreading and glorifying the original creative work!

Take 2: Action: Cast a Vote!

Bollywood votes this election in large numbers and uses their star power to urge Indian population to do their duty too!

Aamir Khan made changes in his US vacation with kids, to come and cast his vote. He said after casting his vote: "I have travelled 48 hours to cast my vote, so people can certainly go out from their homes to cast their vote. If you love your country, this is the day to show it. I'm happy to see so many senior citizens casting their vote here. I appeal to the youngsters to come out and vote."

Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh flew down from South Africa where the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches are being played to cast his vote and said 'we should vote and give a chance to better people'….'When I endorse everything from candy to soft drinks, this is something I have to support,'…. 'I had to make it a point to come and vote,'

Indian Election 2009 - Starring the Indian film Industry!

Indian politics have always attracted celebrities. Over the years there have been many actors from Bollywood, Tollywood, and Kollywood…… etc who have turned to politics and some were even successful politicians. Having the ability to draw audiences, crowds and votes by their charisma, many actors enjoy the power they have with people beyond the silver screen and have moved into political careers.

The film actors started getting involved on a smaller level initially by becoming the non elected Rajya Sabha members like Pritvi Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Nargis Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Vaijantimala Bali, Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Vinod Khanna, Shabna Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, and others served in Rajya Sabha.

Later the film actors in national and regional languages of India who had mass appeal were approached by politicians to campaign for respective parties or candidates. The people came in larger numbers to hear a politician speak when film stars accompanied him in the election meetings!

Manoj Kumar,Amitabh Bachchan , Shatrughan Sinha, Raj Babbar, Hema Malini, Dharmender, Vinod Khanna, Suresh Oberoi, Rajesh Khanna, Govinda, Poonam Dhillon, Padmini Kolhapure, Jaya Prada, Chunkey Pandey, Juhi Chawla, Nagma, Nafisa Ali, Mahima Chaudhari, Sanjay Dutt…… have campaigned/campaigning on the national level.

Bhupen Hazarika, Satabdi Chatterjee, Kumar Bangarappa,Vishnu Vardhan, Kamal Hassan, Anant Nag, Murli Mohan, Rajendra Prasad, N. Balakrishna, Junior NTR, Pavan Kalyan, Naga Babu, Mahesh Babu, Rajasekhar, Jeevitha, Jayasudha, Vijaya Shanti….. have been campaigning in the respective states or regional levels.

After superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s venturing into national politics by standing in the election as a congress party candidate and winning the constituency, many actors immediately followed suit. Though Amitabh Bachchan later retraced back into acting after quitting politics.

Shatrugan Sinha, Vinod Khanna , Jaya prada , Govinda, Nafisa Ali, Raj Babbar, Shekar Suman, and others have contested or contesting as political candidates. Sanjay Dutt also tried contesting but unfortunately was denied candidacy.

In the past, south Indian film stars have had better success as politicians. There have been successful politicians and even chief ministers in Tamilnadu and Andra Pradesh. M. G. Ramachandran, Janaki, Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu; NTR and now Cheeranjivi in Andra Pradesh.

Indian film celebrities this year have risen with enthusiasm it seems to bring a better change in politics inspired by heavy involvement of Hollywood celebrities for Obama in Election 2008 in USA. Hollywood celebrities like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ed Norton, Samuel L. Jackson, Beyonce, Kal Penn…… had actively campaigned for Obama/Biden ticket. Though film celebrity's involvement in politics is not new in the USA too. President Ronald Reagan and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vouch for this fact.

Interesting though Kal Penn aka Kalpen Suresh Modi, in some of the Indian celebrities pattern switched into a political career by joining the White House Office as Public Liaison Officer.

But this year Indian film industry has contributed to the election in other ways besides standing for elections or campaigning for various parties. Bollywood actor Aamir Khan launched a film to promote the voter awareness campaign. The campaign theme "Sacche ko chune, acche ko chune" also carries the message telling the voters not only to cast their vote, but realize the importance of their vote.

Also an ad campaign by the Election Commission, "Pappu can't Vote", parodying a popular song “papu cant dance sala” from film directed by Aamir Khan, makes a pun on the trendy youth who abstain from voting is drawing youth into the election 2009.
Another Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan is similarly appealing for involvement of youth in this election, and released a video urging the young voters to go out and vote.

Yes, film industry and politics have been connected since long but there was a time when entertainers, actors, celebrities knew their place, but later they started influencing the markets and endorsing products, next they influenced voters and endorsed politicians and now some have moved onto become the leaders and executors in politics!

Cast:
Jamal Malik -Dev Patel/ Tanay Hemant Chheda/ Ayush Mahesh Khedekar
Latika - Freida Pinto/ Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar/ Rubina Ali
Salim Malik - Madhur Mittal/ Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala/ Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail
Prem/Host of KBC- Anil Kapoor
Inspector -Irfan Khan

(The aim and intention of my reviews is to critique and recommend while not revealing the whole story to enjoy the movie when seen. But minor details have been divulged for a proper review!)

“It’s a tale about the trial, tribulations and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit”- a good friend's quote which perfectly says it all.

Slumdog millionaire takes you on a journey of brutal existence, poverty, religious divide, exploitation, hurdles, humbug, survival and crime, all juxtaposed and interspersed with cheering scenes, exciting moments, fantasies, tender emotions, dreams and exhilarating situations. You go through a gamut of emotions all in one brilliant movie.

The story is about how an orphan from the slums of Mumbai rises from rags to riches remembering his memoirs of life as knowledge for winning a game show. Jamal Malik a spirited kid, orphaned at a young age goes through many hurdles and challenges in life, yet overcomes and triumphs. He is a beggar, a thief, an imposter, a guide at Taj Mahal, a waiter, has a brother in underworld, is a tea server at a call center and finally goes on a game show- who wants to be a millionaire/ Kaun Banega Crorepati not for the money but to reach out to his lost love.

His life shown in flashbacks juxtaposed with the questions of the game show and the reason for his awareness of the answers is brilliantly depicted. The slumdog becomes the underdog and rooted by audiences across India to win, but the show’s host gets doubts about the authenticity of his answers and knowledge and get him interrogated by the cops, where he further relates his poignant adventures of life.

The characters, all relatively new artists acted brilliantly. Dev Patel as a somber and subdued Jamal who shows sudden wit and cleverness did a great job for an upcoming teen British TV artist. Ayush Mahesh Khedekar who plays the younger Jamal was amazingly talented. He shows the sweet innocence, the emotions, the depth of pain, the loss of friendship, betrayal by his brother, the exuberance of seeing his favorite hero Amitabh Bachchan, going thru shit literally, all portrayed so well.

All the characters that played Latika were good. But the characters that played Salim were again brilliant. The young character Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail starts to build the mean, bigheaded, selfish character which gets further negatively built by Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala and get graduated by Madhur Mittal into a power and money maniac involved in the underworld.

Anil Kapoor as the condescending host is good, but the reason his character was negative is not detailed. The only reason may be to develop sympathy factor to the contestant. Irrfan Khan is his usual best. The rest of the cast gave good performances and I guess the co-director and casting director Loveleen Tandon needs to be credited for such a talented cast.

The music By A. R Rehman is excellent and uprising. The cinematography and screenplay is exceptional, the direction is excellent. Dan Boyle has to be applauded for such a well made movie.

The rags to riches slumdog kind outstanding movies have been made earlier, like Amitabh Bachchans, Deewar or Lawaris and more. But what makes this different is the real life like depiction and possible dreams through modern day game shows. The depiction of how similar circumstances bring out different personalities is also showcased well, contrasting the lives of the two brothers. In a bollywood masala movie the parallel would be too contrasting and surreal, where as in slumdog it is more realistic.

The depictions of parts of India in a bad way, the slums and the poverty and the condescending characters have been not appreciated by some media in India. But one has to accept the reality of life, ignoring them doesn’t make them disappear. Every country and city has alternate realities, and that’s a fact for many big cities. It’s unfortunate but life is like that! Get over that and appreciate the movie for its brilliance.

The movie is exhilarating, narrative is crisp, editing is perfect, pace is quick, music is rousing, and the story is moving. Not many movies in the recent past have that simply perfect movie experience. This is going to get an Oscar.

Let’s start with the name of the movie – ‘Ghajini’ it’s named after the villain of the movie. How many movies in bollywood could be associated with villains names. Even villains like Amjad Khan or Amrish Puri didn’t have movies named after them. Yet the villain of this movie Pradeep Rawat doesn’t even look menacing! Yes he acts violent, but doesn’t resonate it.

If anyone resonates in the movie, it’s Aamir Khan. Be it the eight pack physique with striking handsome looks or the head shaved and tattooed intimidating brute who speaks more with his silence, sounds and body language than words.

Based loosely on the English movie Momento, it’s about a man who suffers short term memory loss, yet in his mission to take vengeance on his girlfriends murderer he organizes his life, goal and living with a Polaroid camera and writing on the wall and tattooing on himself.

It has some Hollywood like movie shots and sequences mixed with bollywood masala. It has romance, comedy and mystery and a lot of violence. Yet the story has a lot of loose ends, very surprising for a perfectionist Aamir khan film.

Some things go overboard and unacceptable, one of that is the rolled up short sleeve in a formal suit to show off the bulge in the biceps. Another is the absurdity of pace in tracing Aamir with small evidence by a cop!

While the Song , ‘hai guzarish’ showcases Aamirs new stud looks, the ‘Behka ‘song adds curiosity to the movie with the hyped up 6 new hairstyles and different looks. Though the songs in the movie are good, they didn’t fit well in the movie.

The heroine Asin is sweet and funny but does borderline overacting. Jiah Khan as a medical student doesn’t do much. The villain as mentioned earlier is not villainous enough. Only Aaamir stands off with his amazing acting abilities.

There is not much to say of the story. You don’t walk out of the movie, happy or sad or moved. It doesn’t have any special experience. Ghajini will be remembered for Aamir's acting and nothing else.
