Muskaanein Jhooti Hai Song;

Talaash is a psychological thriller which has a  murder to solve, a mystery to unveil, emotions and relationships strained with personal loss to heal, and paranormal phenomena’s!

Talaash falls in the category of good movies to watch in the recent releases, but if you are an Aamir Khan fan, this movie is not his best. This movie is not an Aamir Khan focused movie and his fans may fall short of their expectations. Hence now I understand the conflicting views of the many viewers about this movie!

The movie set in the underbelly of the Mumbai city’s red light district,  starts with a film actors car  driving off the road, plunging into the waters to drown. Solving this case is Inspector Surjan (Aamir khan) who is going through personal trauma of his son’s drowning accident. The commonality of the drowning incident makes this case the Inspectors obsession. This leaves his depressed wife ( Rani Mukerjee) in further state of loneliness and  in quest for emotional survival. As the cop investigates this complicated mystery, he gets clues from a mysterious hooker Rosy ( Kareena Kapoor) who helps in unraveling the twists of this movie!

The movie though well made to a certain extent has multiple themes working simultaneously which complicates the intrigue and suspense in the story.  Though the thrill also gets predictiable before the end.

The acting of the both the actresses, the  memerising Kareena Kapoor and the devoid of makeup depressed Rani Mukerjee was good.  The brilliance of  Aamir Khan  was he  underplaying  himself, and becoming the role in the movie. But paradoxically will also have to say he doesn’t outshine himself in this movie like in his many other roles in bollywood movies!

Director Reema Kagti  and writer Zoya Akhtar  create a movie with a genre of  psychological thriller with paranormal phenomena which helps them get away with their plotline and their ending.  They could have skipped the hints through the movie which made it a little predictable for the keen audience. The movies dialogs surprisingly are not reflective of dialog writers like Farhan Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap. But the songs have beautiful lyrics of Javed Akhtar, tuned to good music by Ram Sampath. Overall it’s a good movie. Not great, but good.

Review: Birjis Adeni Rashed

(The aim and intention of my reviews is to critique and recommend while not revealing the whole story to enjoy the movie when seen. But minor details have been divulged for a proper review!)

The theme of the movie may be about English, but it’s the story of many a woman in today’s world!  It’s a story about a mom, a wife, an overworked, unappreciated, dominated, overlooked, taken for granted,  hardworking woman!  And how this woman blossoms and finds her self-worth and achieves a new dimension to life!

In a comeback movie, Sridevi after her hiatus from bollywood acts in a true woman centric movie and achieves accolades for her acting.  Sridevi plays Sashi, a demure middle class wife, mom, home-maker and Ladoo( Indian sweet) caterer; A woman who deprioritizes herself for a family who sadly undermines her personality with their constant snubs and slights and condescending attitude for just her inability to speak proper English!

When this same woman travels alone from India to America for her niece’s wedding, she manages with her meager spoken English with the help of encouraging people she meets like Amitabh in a cameo;).  Be it the air  or character of  New York or the independent, liberated and self–reliant  attitudes of  her sister and her daughters, Shashi gets  motivated to be more free-willed and secretly enrolls in a English learning crash course.

This class of immigrants from France, China, Pakistan, Africa, Spain and India get together learning English   “Mind Your Language” style.  While learning the language, the encouragement, appreciation and the little victories builds Shashi’s confidence. The romantic interest she gets from the French Chef   further boosts her morale and self worth.

Finally in control of the English language and gaining the self confidence to stand up for herself , Shashi  is able to express her in-depth emotions about a good marriage and the roles of a good family when she toasts  a speech at her niece’s wedding.  Her simple lines that a spouse has to help the other when the wheels of the marriage are not equal, strikes an arrow at her husband who used to put her down every given chance to show his superiority and male chauvinism.  But her uplifting line and the ethos of the movie is if you are not getting help, then help yourself and raise oneself , self actualize and add a dimension to your life!

The movie has pleasing music, specially the  number Ghustaq Dil. The movie is carried totally on Sridevi’s shoulders, who does an excellent job portraying the role of Shashi. The other actor who adds charm is of course the French chef  Mehdi Nebbou.  Shashi’s little son was a sweet addition whose role and the  kid who played it both were endearing . The movie would have been better with lesser melodrama and some more comedy to have a balanced movie! The screenplay and direction needed  little more depth. But not bad start for a new director, Gauri Shinde.

Flaws: It doesn’t make sense that a software engineer didn’t know English and joined the class! The  English accents  of  a south Indian may not be perfect but the grammatical  English of an educated person should be right. I guess the director just needed more Indians in the cast for the class;)

Merits:  A Motivating movie for women to emancipate oneself and  find their self-worth!  Subtle one liners which carry a lot of emotional depth  giving  hints to the families in the audience to help the women in their lives empower themselves and self actualize;)

Review: Birjis Adeni Rashed

(The aim and intention of my reviews is to critique and recommend while not revealing the whole story to enjoy the movie when seen. But minor details have been divulged for a proper review!)

 Title Song: Ala Barfi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=_oyI0C2kBRc

Picturesque setting of beautiful Darjeeling  in its  old world charm of the hill station with lush green hills, tea plantations and chugging train is very mesmerizing, refreshing and beautifully captured in  “Barfi”.  As against the recent fast paced Bollywood movies set in exotic international destinations with racing screenplays, this slow paced movie in quintessential settings featuring three very individualistic protagonists with excellent performances is very charming, sweet, yet sad.

The protagonists are the sweet and charming deaf and dumb hero, Murphy/Barfi ( Ranbir Kapoor); The beautiful and emotionally expressive heroine Shruti( Illeana D’Cruz) , and the Autistic strong-minded heroine, Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra). Yes, there are two heroines and one hero; it’s a kind of triangle romance, yet not. Since the movie is not about romance, but a story of these individual characters in relationship with each other in different circumstantial situations of life!

The movie stands out for its brilliant acting. All three protagonists had stellar performances. Ranbir Kapoor is exceptional as Barfi and oozes of charm despite his impairments.  His actions and expressions say a lot in this movie.  Priyanka in her role as  Jhilmil, an autistic strong minded girl has some excellent performances. And Ileana as Shruti engages you into the story with her emotive expressions and captivating face.

The magic of the movie was the silent movie kind charisma with beautiful soulful music.   The movie has many vignettes of sweet and captivating moments, light hearted and Chaplin-esque like slapstick comedy which cloaks the sad and bittersweet part of the story. Besides these episodes of genius, the director sometimes looses focus and direction through the movie. The reasoning got lost when too many factors and variables and silly subplots were added to the story. Having two lead characters with disabilities, may have lost the story’s focus too.  The story jumping through three timelines in flashback mode also added to the perplexity.

The music in this movie is very soulful and the lyrics of some of the songs are interesting and playful, which brings a lot of light heartedness to the movie.

Though the director walks us through the poignant life and emotions of characters with disabilities, their struggles for normalcy, their daily hurdles and society’s negative attitudes towards them; the director sometimes has inaccurate depiction of the characters with disabilities. Though only a medical professional can tell how accurate the autistic characteristics were, but the hearing and speech impaired Barfi is shown as soft in his head at times, broadening the depth of disability for no reason!

Its sad, what could have been a brilliant movie with some amazing content, performances and cinematography, is not, partially because of its dragging end, plot digressions, improper editing, and not working to bring any societal change in attitudes towards disabilities!

Bollywood Music maestro A.R.Rehman now a regular performer at Oscars!

Hans Zimmer and Pharell Williams with A.R.Rehman, Sheila E and Ann Marie Calhoun

A.R. Rehman in the pic with Ann Marie Calhoun

Music maestro AR Rahman, who had performed at the Academy awards last year, returned to the prestigious ceremony as a part of the Oscars house band this year! At the 84th Academy Awards, 2012 , composer Hans Zimmer was the show's musical consultant with Pharell Williams, and the team of A.R.Rehman, Esperenza Spalding, Sheila E, Giorgio Moroder, and Junkie XL.

This years ceremony  had great  cinematic music  with a little spice in the sound and vocals. Performing from the Kodak Theatres balconies , the interesting mix of star musicians played in between each award and during  the commercial breaks along with the orchestra below the stage.

With lack of music performances at the Oscars this year, the house band with some recognizable talent was a crucial move by the academy .  The only performance was  Grammy-winner Esperanza Spaulding‘s rendition  of Louis Armstrong's 'What A Wonderful World' for the  “In Memoriam” segment with The Southern California Children’s Chorus, as a tribute to the dozens of entertainment industry professionals who died in the last 12 months.

A.R.REHMAN, the bollywood composer and music director, who won two Oscars in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire besides performing  on the Oscar stage in 2009, also had performed last year 2011 at the Oscars, playing  his tracks from the film 127 Hours.

He tweeted  “Oscar sangamam - If you are watching the Oscars live, catch our Oscar superband headed by Hans Zimmer perform tonight”. He also posted the  picture with the oscar house band  on his Facebook.

The compilation is called Celebrate The Music

Hollywood actresses in Bollywood Spirit ;)

Uma Thurman and Debra Messing were seen in traditional Indian costumes of Saree and Salwar Kurta as they filmed scenes for  the new musical 'Smash' in New York City today.

The actresses apparently were very pleased to walk in NYC in their Indian clothes in Bollywood spirit!  The trend seems Bollywood actresses wear western clothes in Indian movies, while Hollywood actresses wear Indian outfits in Hollywood productions ;)

The musical series Smash is due to hit TV screens in America this week Feb 6,  2012, before it airs in the UK later this year. Smash is the behind-the-scenes look at a team preparing to put on a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Debra is said to have a starring role in the drama, while Uma is a guest appearance in  just one episode.
